Easy Homemade Chocolate Mousse

Have you ever had chocolate mousse before? If you have then you know how rich and delicious it is. If you haven’t ever tried chocolate mousse before and you are a chocolate lover, then you’ve been missing out! Don’t worry though, I’ve created a chocolate mousse that I’m sure you’re going to love! It is thick, chocolatey, and so good! It will probably be your new favorite dessert!

Although delicious, traditional chocolate mousse is filled with cream, sugar, and eggs. I think this is fine on occasion, but I decided that I wanted to make my own version of chocolate mousse at home. The recipe that I came up with is a lightened up version of traditional chocolate mousse.

Avocado is used as the base of this mousse. The avocado gives this mousse a rich, creamy texture without having to add the cream and eggs that traditional recipes call for. The good thing about avocados is that they are flavorless on their own, so they take on any flavor we give them. You don’t have to worry about the mousse tasting like avocado at all. I know it seems like a weird ingredient to add, but trust me it works out perfectly in this recipe! We’ve also eliminated the white sugar that most recipes would call for and replaced it with agave.

On top of this mousse being much lighter than traditional mousses, it is really easy to make too. All you need is a couple of minutes and a food processor. That’s it!

I hope you will get into the kitchen, try this recipe out, and let me know what you think. I promise, if you love chocolate this is a recipe you’ll want to make over and over again… it’s just THAT GOOD!

Do I have to use dark cocoa powder?

I would highly suggest using dark cocoa powder because it has a more intense chocolate flavor, but if you are in a pinch you could try regular cocoa powder. If you choose to use regular cocoa powder, your mousse will not be as dark and avocado may be a bit visible.

Can I substitute the agave for anything else?

Personally, I have never tried this recipe with any other sweetener. I highly recommend that you use agave, but you could also try honey. It is worth noting that if you do make this recipe using honey, instead of agave, the flavor of the final product will change. If at all possible, try not to substitute the sweetener in this recipe.

Can I use regular milk instead of almond milk?

You can definitely substitute any other unsweetened milk in for the almond milk. We use such a small amount in the recipe that any milk will work just fine.

  • Avocado: 3/4 cup (about 1 medium avocado)
  • Dark Cocoa Powder- 1 Tablespoon + 2 1/4 Teaspoons
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips- 1/3 Cup
  • Agave- ¼ Cup
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk-2 Tablespoons
  • Vanilla Extract- 1 Teaspoon
  • Salt- Small Pinch
  • Step 1 Melt chocolate in the microwave and set aside. To melt chocolate: Put chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute, until the majority of the chocolate chips are melted. Be sure to stop the microwave every 10 seconds to stir the chocolate to avoid burning.
  • Step 2 In a food processor blend 3/4 cup of avocado (about 1 medium avocado) until the texture is very smooth and there are no chunks of avocado.
  • Step 3 Add all rest of ingredients and blend well until all ingredients are incorporated well. You may have to stop the food processor and scrape down the sides a few times.
  • Step 4 Transfer mousse into a container, cover, place in the refrigerator.
  • Step 5 Let mousse set in the fridge for at least 2 hours. I find about 4 hours is best.
